Proteinase K is a broad-spectrum serine protease belong to peptidase family S8. Because it can digest keratin, henceforth, named "Proteinase K". Proteinase K is activated by calcium. It can digest proteins especially after hydrophobic amino acids such as aliphatic, aromatic and other hydrophobic amino acids. Proteinase K is frequently utilized in molecular biology to digest protein and remove contamination from extraction and preparations of nucleic acid. In addition, proteinase K can also be used in in situ hybridization technology, usually for pre-hybridization processing. Proteinase K has the function of digesting the protein surrounding the target DNA, which can increase the chance of the probe binding to the target nucleic acid, thereby increasing the hybridization signal.

Healthgen Biotech recombinant proteinase K (rProK) is derived from yeast and its structure and biological function are consistent with those of natural proteinase K. It is purified by chromatography process, and with calcium and glycerin as protective agents which can help maintain the high activity of proteinase K.
