Description
Cultured meat is a meat produced by in vitro cell cultures of animal cells, which can significantly reduce the use of land, water, feedstocks, and energy, while the production way is environmentally friendly and no animal sacrifice, and makes people enjoy delicious meat without feeling guilty.
The culture media is an essential component of in vitro cultivation, it is responsible for providing the macromolecules, nutrients, and growth factors necessary for cell proliferation. Traditionally, fetal bovine serum (FBS) is used widely in culture media, but it’s a particularly gruesome slaughter byproduct. Secondly, using FBS or other blood-derived albumin may bring potential contamination risks of blood source pathogens, which may be controlled or reduced by strict quality control system, but also will increase testing procedures and quality control costs. Thirdly, FBS depends on blood supply, manufacturers may face insufficient supply due to limited blood sources after the large-scale production of cultured meat.
