Human serum albumin (HSA) is the most well studied plasma protein and an attractive embedding agent due to its availability in pure form and its biodegradability, nontoxicity and nonimmunogenicity.

However, albumin, as it is currently obtained by conventional techniques involving the fractionation of plasma obtained from blood donors is with the risk of transmitting possible viral/prion contaminants. In this respect, recombinant DNA technology offers an important new source of biomaterials that are suitable for use as pharmaceuticals without any need for pooled human blood products.

Healthgen Biotech Recombinant human serum albumin (OsrHSA) has been successfully produced using a patented rice endosperm. The OsrHSA purity is more than 99.99% and endotoxin is less than 0.01EU/mg. Recombinant human serum albumin (OsrHSA) liquid is an acidic, very soluble protein that is extremely robust: it is stable in the pH range of 4–9, soluble in 40% ethanol, and can be heated at 57 °C for up to 10 h without deleterious effects. These properties as well as its preferential uptake in tumor and inflamed tissue, its ready availability, its biodegradability, and its lack of toxicity and immunogenicity make it an ideal candidate for embedding agent.

That recombinant human albumin (OsrHSA) could be substituted for HSA used in the embedding agent was not expected in that there are significant chemical differences between OsrHA and HSA. For example, OsrHA does not possess the chemical heterogeneity that is found in HSA purified from serum with respect to glycation, lipid content, and bound ligands. HSA preparations also contain albumin dimers and higher order oligomers which are only present at low levels in OsrHA. Thus, OsrHA is a very different and much more well-defined protein than HSA.
