Fibronectin (FN) is a high-molecular weight, a glycoprotein of the extracellular matrix. FN binds extracellular matrix components such as collagen, fibrin, and heparan sulfateproteoglycans. FN exists as either an insoluble multimeric fibrillar component of the excetral cellular matrix (cellular FN or cFN) or as a soluble monomeric form that is produced by hepatocytes and secreted directly into plasma (plasma FN or pFN). FN plays a major role in cell adhesion, growth, migration, and differentiation, and it is important for processes such as wound healing and embryonic development.

As knows that the cellular fibronectin is one of the most important ECM proteins, through direct binding with integrins, fibronectin serves as an adhesion protein anchoring cells to the underlying basement membrane. In addition to binding with integrins, fibronectin possesses binding sites for several other basement membrane components such as collagen, fibrin and heparin sulfate proteoglycans. Because of the binding property, the FN can be used to coat the cell cultureware, which can improve cell attachment. It is involved in cell adhesion, growth, migration, and differentiation of cell culture in vitro.

Currently, the FN is purified from the plasma, which however is limited by the availability of supply and source.
