Description

The molecular weight of EGF is 6.3 kD. EGF contains 53 amino acids and 3 disulfide bonds in molecule. When EGF binds to the receptor EGFR on the cell surface, it causes a series of biochemical reactions in the cell: improve intracellular calcium concentration, promote the progress of glycolysis, increase protein synthesis, and enhance the specificity of EGFR gene expression to facilitate DNA synthesis and cell proliferation. rhEGF was used in the in vitro for cell culture that can promote cell growth. EGF is a potent growth factor that stimulates the proliferation of various epidermal and epithelial cells. Additionally, EGF has been shown to inhibit gastric secretion, and to be involved in wound healing. EGF signals through a receptor known as c-erbB, which is a class I tyrosine kinase receptor. This receptor also binds with TGF-α and VGF (vaccinia virus growth factor).
