Human serum albumin (HSA) is the major protein component of human plasma with content of 42±3.5 g/L. It consists of three domains composed of 585 amino acids forming a heart-shaped molecule with molecular weight of 66.5 kDa. HSA is synthelized in the liver and is mainly responsible for maintaining normal osmolarity in the blood circulation system, a carrier for numerous small molecules. HSA is widely used clinically to treat serious burn injuries, hemorrhagic shock and ascites caused by cirrhosis, and as an excipient for vaccines or therapeutic protein drugs, and as a cell culture medium supplement in the production of vaccines and pharmaceuticals.

Currently, commercial production of HSA is primarily based on collected human plasma, which is limited in supply but of high biopharmaceutical demand. To eliminate the potential risk of plasma derived contamination, regulatory agencies have encouraged pharmaceutical companies to use non-animal-derived sources for pharmaceutical production. Here Healthgen Biotech used rice seeds as a bioreactor for large-scale production of recombinant human albumin (OsrHSA). OsrHSA can be highly and stably expressed in rice seeds and can be processed cost-effectively. OsrHSA is determined to be equivalent to pHSA in terms of biochemical properties, physical structure, functions, biologic safety and immunogenicity.

In cell culture, the OsrHSA has such advantages:

In the Mesenchymal Stem Cells (MSCs) culture, the adhesion and proliferation of MSCs in OsrHSA are similar as serum culture.
